Differences in moisture content and shrinkage between innerwood and outerwood of a single cottonwood tree

An eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh.) tree was harvested and used to determine radial and tangential shrinkage, specific gravity (SG), and green moisture content (MC). Observations were made from outerwood (sapwood) and innerwood (heartwood) at various locations along the bole. Innerwood showed an almost three times greater green MC than outerwood in winter. Outerwood was significantly greater than innerwood for radial and tangential shrinkages and SG. Volumetric shrinkage was found to be negatively correlated with height for both wood types, but the correlation between volumetric shrinkage and SG was not significant for any wood type.
