Cell suspension cultures of Ilex paraguariensis, a South American native tree known as the mat plant, were initiated in order to investigate plant defense. Cultures were characterized for their cell growth, chemical composition and sugar consumption. The present work quantified some effects of salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, cellulase and ethanol on cell growth and sugar metabolism. Results suggest that salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate play a role in Ilex paraguariensis response against exogenous ethanol by enhancing its glucosylation by 50% if compared to addition of ethanol alone.
