Indigenous technical knowledge and use of forest plant products for sustainable control of crop pests in Ogun State, Nigeria

Crop pests are a major constraint of farmers in southwestern Nigeria. Farmers cannot sustain the use of often recommended agrochemicals. However, some of the rural farmers have been able to develop indigenous technologies aimed at controlling the pests. The aim of the study was to identify and ascertain the efficacy of some of the forest plant products used for crop pest control. Results indicated that many of the products are effective. It is recommended that further studies be conducted by Farming Systems Research Teams to study the efficacy of these and other forest plant products in other agro-ecological zones, with the long term aim of developing extension packages for pest control from the products.
