Physical and mechanical properties of half-sib families of rust-resistant loblolly and slash pine
1992
McAlister, R.H. | Powers, H.R. Jr
Seed orchards were established in 1975 to provide southern pine seeds and seedlings with proven resistance to fusiform rust. Juvenile and mature wood of half-sibs from seven families of loblolly and five families of slash pine were tested to determine if there were family differences in modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture (MOR), or longitudinal shrinkage. There were significant differences in diameter at breast height, specific gravity, and percent latewood between loblolly and slash pine. There were statistically significant differences between families of loblolly pine for MOR and tangential shrinkage. Within slash pine, there were no statistically significant differences in mechanical properties related to family.
