Survival of downy mildew pathogen of maize in Nigerian Guinea Savanna

Peronosclerospora sorghi, prevalent in Nigerian Guinea Savanna, does not form oospores in either maize or in sorghum. It is therefore unlikely that the pathogen over-seasons in the absence of its host as oospores. None of the grasses artificially inoculated with the fungus were susceptible to infection. Local lesions were formed in false johnson grass (Sorghum arundinaceum) but the significance of this reaction was not established. The present investigation did not provided any evidence of seed transmission of P. sorghi. However, in view of three virtually overlapping maize crops in the Guinea Savanna area of Nigeria, it is suggested that P. sorghi perpetuates itself in maize plant itself. It is likely that enforcing legislation Peronosclerospora sorghi, prevalent in Nigerian Guinea Savanna, does not form oospores in either maize or in sorghum.
