Distribution of Arsenic in Groundwater and Surface Soils in South Western Districts of Punjab

Arsenic which can exist both in organic and inorganic forms becomes toxic under its elevated levels. The build-up of arsenic in soil can mainly be due to weathering of arsenic bearing rocks or irrigation by contaminated groundwater. Two hundred groundwater and surface soil samples were analyzed for arsenic in water and soils in the state of Punjab. About 40% samples of water had arsenic content higher than permissible limits. The arsenic content of soil had direct relation with arsenic content of irrigation water. Continuous use of arsenic-contaminated water may elevate the soil arsenic level, thus enhancing the possibility of arsenic entering into the food chain. The arsenic content in water and soil has no relationship with other chemical characteristics of water and soil.
