Influence of demographic factors on consumer purchasing patterns and preferences for ground beef

Data derived from questionnaires completed by 198 households in Colorado were assessed to ascertain the relative importance of various factors (e.g., consumer age, income, education, marital status) on the purchasing patterns for ground beef (GB). The data revealed that older (compared with younger consumers) tended to make more frequent GB purchases, buy less GB per purchase, and select leaner GB. Households having gross annual incomes exceeding $25,000 tended to buy larger amounts of GB per purchase and leaner GB, relative to households having incomes below $15,000. Households considered leanness, physical appearance, and cost as the most important factors in purchasing GB, with packaging and brand name considered as the least important factors. (wz)
