Impact of training on knowledge level of poultry entrepreneurs of Tamil Nadu

The present study was conducted on 61 trainees who attended six days training on "Poultry training programme for poultry entrepreneurs" conducted by Department of Poultry Science, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai by administering a questionnaire. The extent of knowledge possessed by the trainees was assessed before and after training. The items were related to general care and management, breeding, feeding, disease prevention practices and marketing. It was found that knowledge gain by the trainees was the most in the area of breeding practices of poultry. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of the respondents possessed medium level of knowledge at the pre-exposure stage, while in the post-exposure stage, a majority rose to the high knowledge category. In the area of poultry care and management practices, majority of trainees gained knowledge about provision of artificial lightning of 4 hours to layers. Regarding feeding practices, percent gain in knowledge was more about calcium supplementation to egg laying chicken and reduction of wastage of feed by pellet feeding. With regards to breeding practices, majority had gained knowledge that the age of start of egg laying in layers is 18 to 20 weeks. Regarding disease control and prevention practices, most of trainees had gained knowledge that wet litter can cause coccidiosis outbreak. With regards to marketing and record keeping practices, majority of them were enriched with knowledge that NECC is the association which determines egg price. The difference observed between the mean scores of knowledge level of respondents in pre and post exposure stages was found to be statistically significant.
