A new equation for the calculation of body surface areas (BSAs) in Golden Syrian hamsters

A new equation for the calculation of body surface areas (BSAs) in Golden Syrian hamsters (BSA (cm2) = 96.47 + 1.577 x body weight (g)) has been established. This equation was derived using retrospective data from 30 animals. The data was previously used by this author to compute prototype equations [Experimental Animals, 41, 221-224, 1992]. After the new equation was determined, its applicability was verified in a further 20 animals. In these animals, a high correlation was observed between calculated and measured BSAs (r = 0.967). There was also a high correlation between BSA values calculated using the prototype and new equations. The new equation requires knowledge of body weight, but not K values (Mass coefficients). Moreover, calculation is easier than in the prototype equations. Therefore, the new equation appears to be as effective as the prototype equations, and should be useful for the calculation of BSAs in Golden Syrian hamsters.
