Effect of dietary nucleotides on the plasma fatty acids in at-term neonates

A study assessed the effects of dietary nucleotides on plasma fatty acids in 84 healthy at-term newborn infants during the first month of life. The infants comprised 3 feeding groups: (A) 26 were breast-fed; (B) 35 were fed a milk formula; and (C) 23 were fed the same formula supplemented with 5 nucleotides (of cytidine, guanosine, uridine, adenosine, and inosine) at levels present in breast milk. The results indicated that plasma levels of omega-6 C-18+ polyunsaturated fatty acids increased markedly more in group A and C infants than in group B infants, suggesting the involvement of dietary nucleotides in the biosynthesis of such fatty acids from linoleic acid in early infant development.(wz)
