Color changing sensors (CCSs) emerge as a novel approach for the diagnosis of various ailments like cancer, diabetes, chronic kidney diseases, neurodegenerative disease and malaria. This review article focusses on the mechanism, historical evolution, types of sensors based on biological fluids, nanomaterials and smart technological aspects of CCSs. The advantages and limitations of CCSs associated with their uses in different fields like diagnosis and food and beverages are also covered in this article. The validation of CCSs also plays a key role in the development and commercialization of sensors. The most essential features of sensors involve sustainability, reusability, response time, sensitivity, long-term stability and intelligent detectability. In near future, internet of things and artificial intelligence can be coupled with CCSs for continuous monitoring of diseases.
