Evaluation of the cultivar/rootstock combination rooting system for plum cultivars grown in the central area of Oltenia

The research undertaken focused on behavior scion/rootstock bio systems for plum grown in the central area of Oltenia in order to reconsider and promoting this culture in terms of high productivity and quality of fruit. The aim is to determine the growth vigour of scion/rootstock bio systems on plum root system architecture in the ecological conditions of the central area of Oltenia and its evaluation in order to establish a productive and efficient culture system. In order to determine a more precise breakdown of how the roots of two varieties ('Centenar' and 'Stanley') considered representative for the central area of Oltenia, the skeleton method was used. Each variety has been grafted on four rootstocks ('Oteşani 8', 'Pixy', 'Miroval' and 'Roşior Văratic'). Roots were grouped into four categories depending on diameter (0-4 mm, 4-10 mm, 10-30 mm and over 30 mm), observation were done up to 60 cm depth which was divided into three intervals (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm). Within each category of roots, each depth interval, measurements were done at 0-1 m, l-2 m, 2-3 m and 3-4 m distance from the tree trunk. After studying the skeletal rooting system it was found that the most developed root system was present for 'Centenar') 'Roşior Văratic' biosystems giving it the highest number of roots, the highest weight of 0-4 mm roots (94%), most of the roots being located up to 2 m from the tree trunk.
