The Power of Play
2001
Irvine, Leslie
This paper explores how peoples' play with companion dogs and cats can challenge the human–animal divide. Data from observation and interviews demonstrate how play honors animals' subjectivity and communication skills, making this everyday activity an act of individualized resistance to human disregard for non-human life. While the notion of human supremacy prevails, this paper examines how interconnection with animals becomes possible – and political – through play.
