Large round alfalfa hay bales covered with nutri-shield

Nutri-shield, a spray-on coating, was evaluated for its effectiveness in reducing losses in large round bales of alfalfa hay stored outside. Bales were stored on pallets arid subjected to three levels of precipitation using artificial and natural rainfall. After five months of storage, no differences in dry matter, moisture content, or quality were measured between bales treated with Nutri-Shield and those untreated. Dry matter losses averaged 3.1% in all exposed treatments. For a given treatment across all precipitation levels, no differences were found in moisture content or quality parameters for the total bale or the 10-cm (4-in.) outer layer.
