The influence of aging and nutrition on the occurrence of cerebrovascular diseases
1992
Sawada, T.
It is widely accepted that aging is the most powerful risk factor for stroke. However, the pathogenic process underlying cerebrovascular diseases, in relation to aging in particular, has not been fully identified. In order to investigate the effects of aging on cerebral arteriosclerosis, a cooperative study (of which I was chairman) was performed from 1987 to 1990 under the auspices of the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW). I would like to review here some of the data obtained by this study and to present some of our own data related to this problem. Only a brief comment on the relationship of nutrition to the development of cerebrovascular diseases will be made in this paper.
