Biodegradable Green Glove Containing Ascorbic Acid from Maleated Epoxidized Natural Rubber/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Blend: Preparation and Physical Properties

The objective of this work was to prepare a maleate epoxidized natural rubber (MENR) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (MENR/PVA) blend in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA). Firstly, the MENR was synthesized using maleic anhydride (MA), epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) latex and potassium persulfate as an initiator. Then, the MENR was blended with PVA solution by solution casting method and the effect of MENR on the properties such as swelling ratio, moisture content, moisture absorption, mechanical strength and biodegradation of the MENR/PVA blend was investigated in this work. Results showed that the swelling ratio of the MENR/PVA blend decreased as a function of the MENR content in water medium owing to chemical interaction between carboxylic group from the MENR and hydroxyl group from the PVA. Moreover, the MENR/PVA blend exhibits toluene resistance. The chemical structure of the MENR/PVA blend was also confirmed by FTIR. The moisture content of this sample decreased after the addition of the MENR in the PVA. The elongation at break of this sample was improved after the addition of the MENR. The MENR/PVA blend was used as a polymer matrix for encapsulation of the AA as drug model as a surrogate for a potential antiviral agent. And it gave a good matrix for encapsulated AA. After use, this sample easily decomposed in natural soil.
