Growth, nutrient uptake and yield of baby corn (Zea mays L.)-field pea (Pisum sativum L.) intercropping as influenced by weed management

Weed management had significant positive influence on growth attributes of main as well as component crops. Intercropping systems did not exhibit any positive impact on the yield of baby corn and field pea. Higher values for the yield of baby corn and fodder (18.99 q ha⁻¹ and 207.54 q ha⁻¹) as well as field pea grain and straw yield (14.32 q ha⁻¹ and 19.45 q ha⁻¹) were recorded under sale planting. Weed management treatments significantly enhanced the yield of baby corn as well as field pea. The intercropping system, however, decreased harvest index in both crops as compared to their respective monocrops. Significantly higher baby corn equivalent yield (BEY=25.23 q ha⁻¹) was recorded with intercropping with the Land equivalent ratio (LER) greater than 1.0. Significantly higher uptake of N, P, K by baby corn and field pea was recorded under sale planting with weed management treatments, wherein, post-emergence application of imazethapyr (50 g/ha) recorded significantly higher N,P, K uptake by baby corn and field pea.
