Mortality, nutritional status, and diet during the famine in Karamoja, Uganda, 1980
1981
Biellik, Robin J. | Henderson, Peggy L.
The effects of drought and civil disorder on dietary conditions, nutritional status, and mortality rates were studied in Karamoja, Uganda in 1980 to aid in evaluating the effectiveness of relief operations. A sample of 309 children and 150 households were assessed. It was found that 4.8% of children less than 110 cm. tall were suffering from acute malnutrition. Crude mortality rate had increased 5 times, and infant mortality 10 times, over 1969 census data. Relief food supplies were available to half the needy families. Continued monitoring of agricultural output and food supplies is necessary in assessing the need for more international aid, particularly if drought conditions persist. (cj)
