Nutrient status in leaf and soil of some cultivars of mango in relation to yield

A survey of the twelve mango orchards of West Bengal of commercial varieties viz., Fazli, Himsagar, Langra, Gopalbhog and Aswina were conducted and the NPK status in leaf and soil were analysed. Analysis of soil NPK showed most of the orchards to be poor in soil nitrogen and phosphorus. Among the leaf nutrients, N and P were found to be below the optimal level. Leaf nutrient content in mango showed wide variations with soil nutrient status, variety, year and orchard. The concentration of major nutrients viz., N, P and K in leaves decreased gradually from January to September. Significant variations in soil and leaf nutrients between selected high and low yielding plants were also evident. Thus, fruit yield is directly related to the nutrient status of leaves and soil correlation studies confirmed that the leaf nitrogen before flowering and after harvest, and phosphorus content before flowering were positively and significantly correlated to yield. A similar beneficial association of soil nitrogen and phosphorus before flowering with yield was evident. A comparison of the factors responsible for high and low yield indicate the high yielding trees had higher rhizosphere as well as leaf N, P, K status. Correlation and regression studies revealed various kinds and degrees of association amongst the different factors involved in yield determination. Multiple regression studies indicated that by proper N and P fertilization, yield level of the orchards can be raised.
