Utilization of Solid Wastes and Effluent from the Pulp and Paper Industry as Nutrient Supplement for Sugarcane Crop Cultivation
2015
Devakumari, M Suguna
The paper mills are generating appreciable quantities of solid wastes and effluent everyday. The scientific ways and means of recycling in an integrated, ecofriendly manner these solid wastes and effluent for agricultural purposes had been the main objective of this present investigation. Treated effluent and solid wastes were obtained from Seshasayee Paper and Boards Ltd., Pallipalayam. The solid wastes were neutral to alkaline in nature. Bio sludge was rich in N, K and organic carbon, and lime sludge in Ca and Mg content. The effluent irrigation coupled with Fly ash 20 t ha⁻¹ + Bio sludge 6 t ha⁻¹ + 75% NPK increased the yield of canes by 30.9% compared to 100% NPK under well water irrigation. Fly ash was followed by press mud and bio sludge in increasing the nutrient status of the soil and sugarcane productivity as compared to 100% NPK.
