Guyana's food performance in a Caribbean context: lessons for food security policy
1992
Deep Ford, J.R.
Guyana's agricultural development policy in the post-independence period emphasized production in underexploited regions and ensured domestic markets for producers of import substitutes. Government infrastructure and production projects led the way towards utilization of large-scale modern technologies. Guyana had visions of being the bread basket of the Commonwealth Caribbean. This has not happened. During the period under review Guyana's food security has decreased considerably and it is now considered one of the poorest nations in the Caribbean. The experience offers many lessons for food security policy.
