Alteration of the Internal Water Relations of Rice in Response to Drought Hardening
1980
Cutler, J. M. | Shahan, K. W. | Steponkus, P. L.
Alterations of the internal water relations due to ex. posure to conditioning drought stress were investigated in the leaves of 4 upland rice cultivars. Plants exposed to such conditioning exhibited alterations indicative of osmotic adjustment. Solute potentials of leaves of conditioned plants were 3 to 5 bars more negative than those of control plants at similar water potential or relative water content. As a result, maximal bulk turgor potentials were greater and turgot was maintained to more negative leaf water potential in conditioned plants. Concurrent analysis of the bulk volumetric modulus of elasticity indicated that tissue mechanical properties were not altered by conditioning. All cultivars examined were found to adjust osmotically and the extent of adjustment was similar for all.
