Treatment of log-home logs with thickened boron

The treatability of log-home logs with a 14 percent boric acid equivalent (BAE) solution of the thickened boron DIFFUSOL was evaluated by treating unseasoned southern pine (Pinus spp.) logs with one 5-minute dip, two 5-minute dips 24 hours apart, and one 60-minute dip. Boron content and cross-sectional penetration were determined from weekly samples during covered diffusion storage. After 4 weeks, color test results showed that all treatments averaged about 50 percent cross-sectional penetration. Boron contents in the first 2 inches (50.8 mm) averaged 0.30 percent BAE, a level known to be toxic to several wood-destroying insects.
