Serum and plasma zinc, copper and iron concentrations in Aboriginal communities of North Western Australia
1980
Two groups of Aboriginal people of Australia were examined to determine levels of zinc, copper and iron; biochemical and hematological evaluations were also done. The change in lifestyle for these formerly nomadic people has resulted in increased parasitic infestation, chronic infection, depressed serum iron concentrations, zinc deficiency and increased serum copper levels. The staples of the diet are white four and refined sugar; thus, the diet is largely devoid of zinc. Laboratory findings and field studies indicate that zinc deficiency syndrome seems to be present in the two Aboriginal communities.
