A novel biomass material composite hydrogel based on sodium alginate

Herein, the utilization of organic hydrogels to solve the problems of weak adhesion and low recurrence resistance of water has been investigated, but the application of organic hydrogels has been modest due to the harsh experimental conditions and expensive synthetic materials. In this paper, a biomass-based composite hydrogel P (SA/CMC/PNIPAM) based on sodium alginate (SA), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and N-Isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) was prepared by free radical polymerization. The water absorption multiplicity and flame retardant properties of the composite hydrogel were investigated by water absorption multiplicity experiments and characterization analysis. The results implicated that the water absorption capacity of the hydrogel with SA addition was significantly improved compared with the sample without SA addition, and the water absorption rate was increased by 55% under the same conditions. In addition, the cone calorimetry results indicated that the boards immersed in the SA-added hydrogel had the longest ignition time of 79 s compared to the blank board. The values of heat release rate (HRR) (113.1 kW/m²), and total heat release (THR) (29.3 MJ/m²) indicated the best flame retardant performance of the SA-added hydrogel.
