1985
Roy, C.C. | Belli, D.C.
A literature review (66 references) summarizes and discusses the incidence and risk factors of biliary and hepatic complications in patients receiving prolonged total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and outlines what is known about the pathogenesis of these complications. The review is organized into 3 areas: biliary complications (risk factors; incidence; bile lithogenicity; biliary sludge-to-stone conversion); hepatic complications (abnormal liver function; steatosis; steatohepatitis; chronic liver disease); and liver disease risk factors (immaturity of liver function; sepsis and infection; intestinal microfloral enterotoxins; gastrointestinal surgery in infants; the toxicity of TPN components; the duration of TPN).(wz)
