Incidence of aflatoxin in southern corn, 1969-1970
1973
60 samples of white and yellow corn from all grades except US No. 1 were collected and assayed for aflatoxin. None of the 12 samples of the 1969 crop collected in the south east contained aflatoxin but 14 of 22 samples of the 1970 crop in the same area contained aflatoxin. Corn from that area was infected with southern corn leaf blight in 1970. 4 of the 11 white corn samples contained aflatoxins at levels of 6-141 parts/billion B1 (2 had >20 parts/billion). The positive samples were US grades 4 and 5 with highest levels in grade 5. 17 of 49 yellow corn samples analysed contained aflatoxins at levels of 4-308 parts/billion B1, 10 of these had >20 parts/billion B1. Yellow corn samples with highest levels of aflatoxin were in the poorest grades. Aspergillus flavus was easily isolated from all positive samples.
