Further studies involving a nickel deficiency in chicks

Chickens were given from a day old to 4 weeks old a diet based on maize meal, dried skimmed milk and maize oil and containing less than 0.04 mg Ni/kg, alone or with 3 mg Ni/kg as NiCl2.6H2O. The chickens were studied for abnormalities, and water, fat and ash were estimated in liver, bone, kidney, muscle and skin. Chickens given the diet low in Ni had orange-yellow legs and those given the Ni supplement had brown-yellow ones. The hock joints were thicker, there was some dermatitis near the metatarsal joints and the skin was rougher. The livers of chickens deprived of Ni were less friable and lighter in colour and the fat content was significantly less. In one of 2 trials, the bodyweight of chickens deprived of Ni was significantly less than that of those given Ni.
