Raw shellfish and sushi bars--perils of a passion
1986
A brief review documents 3 public health risks offered by raw shellfish and raw fish sushi bars. These risks include: gastroenteritis associated with the consumption of raw shellfish; infestations of the fish tapeworm (diphyllobothriasis, resulting in a vitamin B12 deficiency) arising from ingestion of raw fish in sushi bars, particularly in Scandinavia, Japan, Jewish families (raw gefilte fish), and in Eskimos; and acute gastric anisakiasis associated with the eating of raw fish, particularly in Japan. The symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these conditions are discussed.(wz)
