A technical review of the potential and real consequences of the effects of undernutrition on the developing brain and on higher mental function is presented and discussed, relative to vulnerable periods in somatic and brain development. There is emerging evidence that ultimate body stature achievement can be restricted by undernutrition at the time of the brain growth spurt; the same may be true for non-physical intellectual growth. Brain growth is unquestionably linked with body growth; hence, in the total absence of knowledge of specific promotion factors of brain growth, the study of body growth retardation becomes quite relevant. At present, the most promising approach to ensure good brain growth is to establish and provide optimum conditions for somatic growth prior to the second (or even third) birthday of infants. (wz)
