The sites of action of growth hormone seem to be present throughout the body, although not always at the same place, rather than at a specific target organ. The primary function of growth hormone is to promote growth or both soft and skeletal tissues. This process is mediated in the liver and possibly the kidney by human growth hormone-dependent growth factors that are now known as somatomedins. Somatomedins act directly on cartilage to stimulate linear growth by causing increased cartilage formation.
