Modification of the land surface by urban development which uses materials which effectively retain heat and accumulation of waste heat generated by urban energy usage have created a serious problem called “Urban Heat Island” (UHI). There are several specific causes of an urban heat island. Those are changes in the thermal properties of surface materials and lack of evapotranspiration, for example through lack of vegetation, in urban areas. Nearly 40% of that increase is due to the prevalence of dark roofs and dark-colored pavement, and the declining presence of vegetation. The implementation of roof top greening is one of effective options to increase the amount of well-watered vegetation. Green roofs are excellent insulators during the warm weather months and the plants cool the surrounding environment. Air quality is improved as the plants absorb and convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. Sunagoke moss has attracted attention as an afforestation plant recently. This is a bio-material with good thermal characteristic. High speed response for evapotranspiration which is one of Sunagoke’s biological characteristics can control latent heat cooling effect if it is used as a greening material for roof top of buildings. An industrial production of Sunagoke moss is required to meet the demand for city roof top greening. In Japan, plant factories are operated for the moss production. To control the optimal automatic aspersion for the production system of moss in the plant factory, a method of analysis for transpiration properties of Sunagoke moss was invented with methods such as the fluid analysis.
