This paper attempts to determine the aspects of whole-body protein turnover which may be measured with confidence given the current knowledge and technologies. Among the topics covered are: 1) the regulation of whole-body protein homeostasis in adults; 2) measurement of amino acid and nitrogen balance; 3) measurement of whole-body protein turnover; 4) mechanisms of diurnal changes in body protein; and 5) methodological discrepancies.
