The topics discussed in this paper include: 1) the purpose and scope of nutritional surveillance; 2) its relevance to Ireland at this time; and 3) certain practical aspects such as information needs and data requirements (quality, relevance, precision, accuracy, timeliness and output) and analysis (presentation forecasting and interpretation). Constraints on the system are identified and its needs indicated.
