Dolomitic limestone bedding effects on dairy manure characteristics

The effects of dolomitic limestone (DoL) on dairy manure (DaM) physical and chemical characteristics and odor and gas control were evaluated in a bench-top study and laboratory study. In the bench-top study, DoL was added to DaM and placed in 1.0-L sedimentation cylinders. The DaM/DoL combination was analyzed for pH, solids, and nutrients. Surface pH slowly increased with time. Approximately 87% of the calcium and magnesium and 70% of the phosphorus was found in the settled solids. In the laboratory study, DoL was added to fresh DaM at approximately a 1:1 ratio (dry basis) and stored in PVC columns. The liquid and settled solids layers were analyzed for pH, solids, nutrients, and viscosity. Adding DoL to DaM decreased solids content in the liquid fraction, increased solids content in the settled solids fraction, increased resistance to flow, decreased odor emissions, and decreased the amount of surface crust.
