Since the 1950's, the production of plums has decreased in Ontario. In contrast, in recent years, imports of plums for fresh consumption have increased substantially. In 1913, when the plum breeding program was initiated at Vineland, the primary objective was to develop cultivars which provided for a seasonal succession of high quality plums, with particular emphasis on late cultivars for export to England. This program resulted in the naming of 4 cultivars: Valor, Verity and Vision in 1967, and Veeblue in 1984. In 1963, the emphasis of the breeding program was shifted to breed cultivars that ripen in August to replace plums that are imported in Ontario for fresh consumption. Voyageur was the first August ripening plum named in 1987. Additional advanced breeding selections are released and some will likely be named in the future to provide for a seasonal succession of early, blue European plums for harvest in August. Vanier, named and introduced from Vineland in 1984, is the only Japanese plum cultivar. Along with the introduction and naming of new cultivars and release of advanced breeding selections, systematic pollination studies have been carried out among different cultivars and selections to determine their pollen cross-compatibility.
