Gastric emptying and small-bowel transit rate in the elderly

A study of liquid gastric emptying and small bowel transit rate in two groups of elderly patients found: a higher initial gastric emptying rate than in a younger control group; mean 5-minute volumes of 159 and 294 ml for the elderly and control groups respectively; and no significant difference between the two groups in emptying rate after 5 minutes. No differences in small bowel transit rate in elderly vs. younger groups were found. The gastric emptying rate and volume data indicate gastric homeostasis impairment in the elderly subjects. (wz)
