A rare case of mixed tumour in the abomasum of an Ongole bull

A 20 year old Ongole bull died with the history of anorexia, severe constipation and prolonged recumbancy since one week before death. At post-mortem examination, about one liter straw coloured fluid was found in the peritoneal cavity. Abomaso-duodenal orifice was severely thickened leading to occlusion of the orifice and the affected area was greyish white in appearance. Gastrointestinal mucosa showed haemorrhages throughout the gut lumen. Impression smears from the thickened abomasal region revealed numerous pleomorphic epithelial cells. Microscopically, proliferation of glandular epithelial cells was conspicuous in the form of aggregates, cords and acini comprising of round to columnar epithelial cells and basally placed nuclei. Some areas revealed infiltration of cells characterized by cigarshaped nuclei and extensive fibrous tissue proliferation. Based on the findings, the present case was diagnosed as mixed tumour of adenocarcinoma and fibroleiomyosarcoma in the abomasum of an Ongole bull.
