Ineffective erythropoiesis was found to contribute significantly to the anemia of vitamin E deficiency in rhesus monkeys. Vitamin E deficiency was associated with an inappropriately small number of circulating reticulocytes, while increased production of erythroid cells in the bone marrow of the monkeys occurred. Ineffective erythropoiesis is corroborated by the decreased utilization of radioiron for the production of circulating hemoglobin. Vitamin E-deficient monkeys failed to compensate for the anemia induced by phlebotomy. However, when parenteral iron was administered, a partial remission of the anemia occurred.
