Decreased activity of xanthine dehydrogenase and serum uric acid in rats fed partially hydrogenated fish oil

The activity of xanthine dehydrogenase in rat liver is depressed by feeding of peroxisome proliferators such as clofibrate and di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate which induce hepatic peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation. In this study we examined whether feeding of partially hydrogenated fish oil which is known to induce peroxisomal beta-oxidation can also depress the activity of xanthine dehydrogenase and affect serum and urinary uric acid in rats. Feeding the diets containing partially hydrogenated fish oils (20% w/w) for 16 days to the rats depressed xanthine dehydrogenase activity and increased peroxisomal beta-oxidation activity in liver as compared with feeding corn oil. Uric acid and allantoin in serum and urine were decreased with feeding partially hydrogenated fish oils.
