Biological effects of caffeine: FDA status
1983
Miles, Corbin I.
The safety of caffeine consumption relative to the regulatory status of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is discussed. Specific attention is given to FDA's proposal to delete caffeine from the "Generally Recognized as safe" (GRAS) list, and to interim-list added caffeine as a food additive for present uses (pending the results of studies on its safety and functionality for food use). The GRAS proposal cited the need for specific studies and concluded that present use of added caffeine will be safe for the time needed to conduct these studies. New proposals are expected soon on the basis of responses and recommendations received to FDA's GRAS proposal, specifically on caffeine and soda water beverages. (wz)
