Shrinkage and set in drying of 4 by 4 Douglas-fir lumber
1995
Wu, Q. | Milota, M.R.
The moisture content distribution, board shrinkage, and released and set strains across the board thickness as a function of time were measured during the drying of 4-by 4-inch (10- by 10-cm) Douglas-fir heartwood lumber. The measurements were made by arranging two sample boards so that the evaporative surfaces were either the tangential or the radial faces of the boards. Both boards showed differential shrinkage in the direction perpendicular to the evaporative surface during drying, with a maximum near the time of stress reversal. Under similar drying conditions, the differential shrinkage and set at the board's surface and center were greater when drying occurred from the tangential face rather than the radial face.
