Influence of weed control practices on grain yield and protein content of small seeded lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) under rainfed condition

A field experiment was conducted during Rabi 2010–11 and 2011–12 at the Agricultural Research Farm, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (U.P.), India to evaluate the influence of different weed control practices on seed yield and protein content of small seeded (microsperma) lentil. Two hand weeding at 30 and 45 DAS was optimum in respect of grain yield, protein content and protein yield. However, highest NPK content in grain and straw was recorded under weed free condition followed by HW at 30 DAS and 45 DAS (at par with weed free) while chlorimuron ethyl (as PPI at 4 g/ha) involved treatments (sole, integrated or sequential with other POE herbicides) recorded minimum NPK content in grain straw. The protein content was comparatively higher in treatments exclusive of herbicides followed by integrated treatments (herbicide+manual weed control).
