Selenium
1979
Bie, James E.
Selenium's provisional Recommended Dietary Allowance of 50-200 micrograms a day was established in 1977. A map shows states with soil deficient in selenium which produces deficient grains. Supplementation is needed. A safe Brewer's yeast strain with high selenium content is being marketed. Selenium may protect against cancer, relieves angina pain when combined with vitamin E, and is a powerful anti-oxidant which slows aging. Excess sulfur in the soil from fertilizers and pollution lessens selenium in grains.
