A 5-year longitudinal study comprising 2 surveys conducted in 1976 and 1981 assessed changes in the nutritional status of 206 urban elderly living in Perugia, Italy. Anthropometric data revealed that obesity was common in both sexes (but more so in women), and that male body fatness decreased over the study period. Food and nutrient intakes were similar between the 2 surveys, but intakes of milk, eggs, fish, and legumes were low and men had high meat and alcoholic beverage intakes. Serum cholesterol remained elevated between the 2 surveys relative to other Italian populations, and 1981 intakes of 3 vitamins (vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin) were below recommended standards.(wz)
