A comparison of variance components in corn yield trials. I. Error, tester X line, and line components in top-cross experiments

Formulas are presented which permit the estimation of variance components and their ratios in randomized blocks and split-plot designs involving replicates, lines, and testers. The magnitude of these components have been estimated in 11 experiments. These estimates indicate that for a fixed number of plots the greatest gain in total combining ability can be expected from an increase in number of testers, followed in order by an increase in lines with an increase in number of replicates being least efficient.
