The How, what and why of stress management training

Employees and employers can reap the benefits when a company commits to a well run stress management program. Some benefits include: improved performance and productivity; lower turnover; reduced absenteeism and health costs; and improved job satisfaction and morale. The cost of stress and poor performance are demonstrated in a number of ways: more errors are made, absenteeism and turnover increase, and employees are less creative and less effective decision makers. The stressed employee can affect others also. Stress management programs must be attended freely by employees if benefits are to be gained. Programs can be oriented to dealing with existing stress or with ways to prevent its development. Training objectives (one program is outlined) must be clear and require achievable objectives (knowledge and skill acquisition). During the training, sources of stress are identified; feedback techniques are used; and benefits are evaluated (increased skills and effectiveness, decreased tension). (kbc)
