Rice root- knot nematode: An emerging problem in Punjab

Punjab agriculture is dominated by rice – wheat cropping system. During rice growing season, in the past few years plant samples of rice nursery and field showing yellowing of leaves were received in the nematology laboratory of Department of Plant Pathology, PAU, Ludhiana. On critically examining the plants, heavy knot formation was observed on the roots. On teasing these knots, females and different developmental stages of root knot nematode were observed. On the basis of perineal pattern the nematode was identified to be Meloidogyne graminicola. In order to know the level of infestation of this nematode in the rice nursery, a preliminary survey of. Ludhiana and surrounding districts was conducted during June, 2010 and 2011. Out of 189 locations observed, The incidence of root–knot nematode was recorded in 73 locations (39%) with mild to light severity. Heavy incidence was observed only at 10 sites. The incidence of rice root- knot nematode was observed only in the light soil. Heavy incidence was observed in direct sown rice crop at PAU, Ludhiana. Under pot conditions wheat was found very good host of this nematode. Incidence of this nematode on wheat in field was also observed in village Jhanda Madho Singh, Distt. Kapurthala. With changing cultural practices in rice cultivation like direct sowing and bed transplanting, root-knot nematode problem is going to increase. Similarly, in case of wheat, zero tillage and increase in temperature during sowing time (November) due to global warming will increase the incidence and severity of rice root – knot nematode on wheat as well.
