The anatomy, biochemistry and histological identification of human brown adipose tissue (BAT) is reviewed. Hibernomas (benign tumors of BAT), pheochromocytoma and the possible role of BAT in sudden infant death are discussed. Altered abdominal fat distribution and altered metabolic responses to cold in diabetes, Cushing's disease and obesity may be caused by BAT activity.
