Bone mineral content of amenorrheic and eumenorrheic athletes

A study assessed whether the hypoestrogenic status of amenorrheic female athletes was associated with a regional bone mass decrease, relative to a eumenorrheic control group matched for number, age, weight, height, sport, and training regimen. The result indicated than amenorrhea in female athletes may, in fact, be accompanied by a decrease in mineral density of the lumbar vertebrae. (wz)
